Wash Trading
An illegal stock trading practice where an investor simultaneously buys and sells shares in a company through two different brokers.

A transaction designed to make it appear that a purchase and sale has occurred even though no change in ownership occurred. Entering into, or purporting to enter into, transactions to give the appearance that purchases and sales have been made, without incurring Market risk or changing the trader's market Position. The Commodity Exchange Act prohibits Wash trading. Also called Round Trip Trading.

This increases the activity in the stock and gives the impression that "big news" is about to come out.
