The concept of merchant banking dates back to the 1700's, when European merchant families invested in customers to promote increased trade. Merchant banking flourished in America after the Civil War. Investors forged the way into that period's new Industrial Economy by making loans and equity investments to the entrepreneurs building the 'high-tech' businesses of that period: railroads, oil businesses and manufacturing companies.
