Sound Community Bank

Vision:

As a mutual savings bank, Sound Community Bank is a unique provider of financial services. This means that, although we will always strive for a healthy level of earnings, the first and most important measure of our success will be the level of service that we provide to our clients.

In our role as a service organization, we will endeavor to become our clients' financial partner providing products and pricing that will help our clients achieve their financial objectives in the areas of transaction processing, use of credit, asset growth through home ownership and accumulation of savings. We will also help with long range planning for specific financial goals such as retirement or college education.

Sound Community Bank strives to be the primary financial partner for our clients and their families, by providing the products which meet the needs of our client base. In addition to measuring our products by the value of their service, we will also offer competitive pricing. Pricing will be based on cost and must provide value to our clients.

The Bank is primarily a consumer financial organization. Our product orientation will provide those services which are common to families and individuals. We will also assist businesses with financial services. These products include real estate-secured lending, secured loans, checking, savings, retirement accounts and lines of credit.

Sound Community Bank will deliver products to clients through a combination of personal service in branch outlets and automated services such as 24 hour phone service, ATMs, computerized lending and Internet access. The Bank is committed to meeting the convenience needs of our clients in a manner which is both cost effective and satisfying to the clients.

Sound Community Bank is a strong financial institution by any measure. This is a fact of which we are understandably proud and a heritage which we will continue. Strong net worth and steady profitability are a part of our heritage and our future. As we continue to achieve these financial measurements of success, we will continue to grow in a manner which allows us to serve our clients with convenience and competitive products.

Sound Community Bank is proud to be considered a quality employer. In our role as a quality employer, we will continue to operate on the basis of teamwork with all employees working toward a common mission. We will provide effective benefits and programs such as incentive or bonus pay, which allow employees to participate in the success of the Bank. We are committed to becoming a learning organization to help our staff develop and enhance their skills with the understanding that staff members will also accept responsibility for personal development.

Finally, Sound Community Bank prides itself on its role as an ethical corporate citizen, sensitive to community issues, the environment, and standards of conduct which make us unique and caring.

Sound Community Bank will continue to develop a style we associate with small companies rather than bureaucracies. We will provide the personal touch and extra responsiveness our clients deserve and expect, while managing our resources and conducting our business as a sophisticated financial organization and ethical corporation.
History:

It all began with a shoebox...

In 1952, Ed Johnson discovered the need for a credit union for his fellow Associated Grocer (AG) employees while working in the Accounting and Payroll Department.  The following year, a shoebox sat in the AG warehouse off East Marginal Way in south Seattle containing the first records of loans and deposits for the Associated Grocers Employee Federal Credit Union (AGEFCU).

The history of AGEFCU is quite similar to that of many start-up credit unions in the 1950’s.  Employees, particularly hourly workers, lacked access to modestly priced small loans at reasonable terms.  By collaborating and compiling deposits, loans could be granted with little collateral based on payments via payroll deduction.

In 1986, the credit union began extending its products and services to employee groups outside of AG.  To create an opportunity to affiliate communities into the credit union rather than just employee groups AGEFCU converted converted to a state charter from a federal charter..

Representing over 450 small businesses, a new name was chosen to reflect the spirit of its expanded membership and AGEFCU became Credit Union of the Pacific in 1991. Later that same year, Seattle landmark store, Frederick & Nelson, closed its doors and merged their credit union with Credit Union of the Pacific. To ensure branch access to its new members and better service our communities, Credit Union of the Pacific opened new branch locations in downtown Seattle, Lynnwood, Lakewood, and Sequim.

After opening four new branches during the 90's, the opportunity to supply products to a larger membership base demonstrated the institutions potential once again.  In order to offer additional products, expand access to clients and improve access to capital, the Board of Directors recommended converting to a Mutual Savings Bank. The membership ratified this decision and in May of 2003 the conversion occurred and Credit Union of the Pacific became Sound Community Bank.

The name Sound Community Bank was selected based on the heritage of the financial institution and our credit union roots.  Our mission is making dreams come true and our values include giving back to our communities.

In 2008 Sound Community Bank completed its reorganization to the mutual holding company structure by forming a mid-tier holding company, Sound Financial, Inc.  At this time Sound Community Bank also set up a charitable foundation. The Sound Community Foundation grants money to local charities and organizations to help make a difference in our communities.

What began with a shoebox is now a local, community organization with over $300 million in assets and soon to be six branch locations to serve you.
