Merrimack Valley Federal Credit Union

History:

The Merrimack Valley Federal Credit Union, founded in 1955 and established by the Union Local 1365, was originally named the Communications Workers Employee Credit Union. The first offices were located at Western Electric in North Andover, now known as Lucent Technologies. The name changed to Merrimack Valley Federal Credit Union within a year.

By 1962, MVFCU had attained its first $1 million in assets. During that same year, Frank Serio was elected to the Board of Directors and remains on our Board today. In 1967, G. Harvey Ellis was named the first General Manager and ten years later the first computer system was installed. The 1970's brought profound change to the credit union industry, with NCUA instituting federal share insurance. Credit unions were now able to offer a check-like instrument still known as the share draft. Mortgage products and direct deposit were soon to follow.

During the 1980's MVFCU attained $100 million in assets, opened a new corporate office at 1475 Osgood Street and named Duncan MacLeod its second General Manager. The 80's also introduced Visa cards and an emphasis on becoming our members primary financial institution became our goal.

MVFCU experienced significant growth during the 1990's when the credit union's field of membership opened up from serving one employer group to many in the Merrimack Valley. Today we have over 200 employer groups offering credit union membership benefits to their employees and their family members. To accommodate growth, we opened our second branch location in Haverhill and very soon after introduced online bill payment to provide even more convenience to our members.

Entering the year 2001, MVFCU attained $300 million in assets, following that achievement with a third branch location in Methuen and naming Peter J. Matthews, Jr President/CEO.

In September 2007, Merrimack Valley Federal Credit Union relocated its corporate headquarters and branch location from 1475 Osgood Street, North Andover, MA to 500 Merrimack Street, Lawrence, MA. Presently, the credit union has branch locations in Haverhill, Lawrence, North Andover, Methuen MA and Plaistow NH.

Through it all, our focus has not changed. We, like credit unions everywhere, are all about people helping people. Our focus is on providing quality products and services at reasonable rates and costs. We are successful when our members are attaining their financial goals and we take our role in their lives very seriously.
