Overview:
Founded in 2001, Castanea Partners is a private equity firm built on the belief that both industry expertise and operating experience drive long-term investing success. We provide equity capital to companies in industry sectors where we have leadership, advisory and investing experience. Castanea is principally focused on investing in branded consumer products and services. Our target sectors include brands with multi-channel distribution in specialty apparel and fashion, footwear, accessories, beauty and personal care, food and beverage, sporting goods, outdoor and leisure, household products, and health and wellness. Castanea typically invests between $15M to $75M of equity capital.
Our partners and operating partners have founded, owned or led successful public and private consumer facing companies including Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus Direct, Horchow Catalog, Saks Fifth Avenue, Kate Spade, Pepsi-Cola Bottlers, and Laura Mercier Cosmetics. We believe that this experience, combined with our principal investing and consultative approach, enables us to effectively join forces with management teams. We strive to consistently provide meaningful and measurable financial, strategic and operational support, enabling our portfolio executive teams to focus entirely on their core strength to stimulate growth.
Our founding partners committed substantial capital to each Castanea fund, keeping the interests of all partners highly aligned. |

History:
Castanea was founded in 2001 by Brian Knez and Rob Smith, former co-CEOs of Harcourt General and The Neiman Marcus Group, following the sale of Harcourt General. Included in Castanea's launch were Paul Gibbons, former Treasurer of both Harcourt and Neiman Marcus, and Steve Berg, an investment professional from Bain Capital. Their strategy was to create an operationally focused private equity firm dedicated to investing in lower middle market companies within specifically defined industry verticals.
Today, we are investing our fourth fund, Castanea Partners Fund IV, a fund targeting both small and middle market companies. Our team has grown to over 25 professionals, including five investing and five operating partners.
We focus exclusively on opportunities in industry sectors where we believe our expertise allows us to: i) be knowledgeable participants in the investment process ii) perform effective and efficient due diligence iii) partner closely with selling founders or management to identify and execute significant value for our companies and iv) deliver superior returns to our investors. |
