Seaport Credit Union

History:

Seaport Credit Union was incorporated in 1926 by the French Canadian founders of St. Anne’s and St. Joseph’s parishes in Salem, Massachusetts and was known by the former name St Joseph Credit Union for over 79 years. As a state chartered community credit union the sphere of operations includes all who work or reside in Essex County. First deposits for the Credit Union were accepted at the office of Dr. J.H. Chouinard at the corner of Lafayette and Harbor Streets in Salem.

Five years later, business success caused the Credit Union to move to the first floor of a newly constructed building on Lafayette Street in Salem. Expansion continued in 1952 at which point the Main Office of the Credit Union was built at 3 Harbor Street. Within one year of the Main Office construction the Credit Union saw its assets grow from $600,000.00 to $1 million. Steady growth continued for the next 34 years.

In 1986 the former Naumkeag Trust Company building on Lafayette Street was acquired as a branch office and in April of 2005 the Credit Union changed its corporate name to Seaport Credit Union. Steady growth has continued and Seaport Credit Union now has nearly $60,000,000.00 in assets, maintains a strong capital ratio and supports more than 5000 members. The Credit Union is committed to providing its members with cutting-edge service. These include Online Banking, Bill Pay, eStatements and much more.

Seaport Credit Union's philosophy has always been to offer the most up to date technologies, systems and access for members without the burden of excess fees. Our members are the cornerstone on which we continue to build a solid financial institution providing the citizens of Salem and all of Essex county an alternative to the "big banking institutions" on the North Shore.
