A century and a half ago, almost every town had at least one bank they could call their own. These institutions were the financial heart of the community, fueling its growth during the good times and feeling its pain during the downturns. When the railroad expanded to Western Massachusetts in the mid-1800's, its workers needed a bank they could call their own.
