Overview:

Jackson Walker has a strong regional base of over 300 attorneys in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Angelo, and San Antonio. The firm regularly represents clients in such areas as corporate and securities, litigation, intellectual property, health care, energy, labor and employment, legislative and regulatory, real estate, tax and estate planning, technology, bankruptcy, aviation and international law. The firm's corporate clients include Fortune 500 companies, multi-national corporations, major financial institutions, and a wide range of publicly traded corporations and closely held businesses.

Recognizing that the demands of our clients have assumed international proportion, Jackson Walker in 1994 was one of the founding members of GlobalawTM, a world-wide network of law firms with offices throughout the U.S. and in over 65 countries. These affiliates are a major presence in each of their markets insuring the extension of excellence in service, creativity, and business standards that are reflected by Jackson Walker.

In addition to providing superior legal representation, the firm has always encouraged its attorneys and employees to be involved in the community. Numerous members of the firm are presently serving, or have recently served, as members of city, state, and federal government and on the board of directors of civic, charitable, and trade organizations.

As part of the firm's commitment to excellence, a common characteristic stands out: a focus on practical, cost-effective solutions to legal problems that add value and emphasize what works for our clients based on the highest professional standards.
History:

The law firm of Jackson Walker L.L.P. originated in the late nineteenth century when two brothers--John and George Robertson--brought together their expertise for the practice of law in the then emerging town of Dallas. The Robertson brothers were exceedingly active as attorneys for leading businesses in Dallas and played an important role in the formation of a number of major corporations, including the Dallas Times Herald and the Dallas County Gas Company (today known as TXU), as well as numerous railroads, insurance companies, and general businesses. The initial association of the Robertsons also involved another early notable Dallas attorney by the name of W.J.J. Smith.

Our Formative Years
The firm began to witness change around 1924 when Robert G. Payne joined the Robertson brothers. A number of years later, in 1930, a Fort Worth attorney named John L. Lancaster, Jr. moved to Dallas to become part of the firm. A senior partner in the firm today is John Lancaster, III, whose grandfather was head of the Texas & Pacific Railroad and an important client of the firm.

An important step in the firm's history occurred in 1936 when the existing firm merged with two other leading Dallas attorneys, Neth Leachman and George Gardere, to form what came to be known as Robertson, Leachman, Payne, Gardere & Lancaster.

In 1942, Orrin Miller joined the firm from law school. Mr. Miller later became a leading member of the firm. His name graced the firm for many years. In 1947, the merged firm reorganized following a separation from Leachman and Gardere, and the firm continued with Robertson, Payne, Lancaster, and Miller.

In 1948, another important development in the firm's history transpired with the arrival of Paul Jackson and his protégé Sam Winstead, who left Thompson, Knight, Wright, and Simmons to join the firm. The new firm became known as Robertson, Jackson, Payne and Lancaster.

At about the same time, Professor A.W. Walker, Jr., professor of law at the University of Texas School of Law and noted authority on oil and gas, was persuaded to leave the law school and join the firm as a name partner. Professor Walker had taught an entire generation of Texas lawyers. With the addition of Walker and Jackson, the firm became a true full-service law firm with a particular reputation in tax and oil and gas matters. The firm name became Robertson, Jackson, Payne, Lancaster and Walker.
At the end of 1948, Robert Payne withdrew from active participation in the firm to pursue personal and business interests. His name remained, and although he kept an office until 1958, he did not participate in firm affairs after 1948.

Also during this time, the personnel of the firm changed. Mr. Lancaster and Mr. Robertson passed away, and Don Case, who had been with the firm for a time in the 1940s, rejoined the firm in 1952 from the Texas & Pacific railroad. In September 1958, two Dallas attorneys, Conan Cantwell and Howard Lennon, joined the firm. At this point, the firm's name changed to Jackson, Walker, Winstead, Cantwell & Miller. The firm continued to use this name for the next 30 years. In June 1988, the firm's name was changed to Jackson & Walker. (Later the ampersand was dropped and the firm simply became known as Jackson Walker L.L.P.)

Still Growing
In July 1988, the firm opened a Fort Worth office with five attorneys. Four of the attorneys joined the firm from the law firm of Kelly, Hart & Hallman and one transferred from the Dallas office. By June 1989, eight additional attorneys had joined the Fort Worth office.

During this time, the history of another law firm whose presence played a significant role in the history of Jackson Walker was developing. The law firm of Dotson & Scofield traced its roots to the legal careers of two leading Texas lawyers, Keith Foreman and A.D. Dyess, whose association resulted in the law firm of Foreman & Dyess. Foreman and Dyess dissolved in 1984, and in March of the same year, 30 members of the firm organized the law firm of Dotson, Babcock & Scofield. The firm's name changed to Dotson & Scofield in September of 1989.

On January 1, 1990, Jackson & Walker and Dotson & Scofield combined their strengths to become one of the ten largest Texas-based law firms with the opening of Jackson Walker's Houston office. In September of 1991, the firm opened a San Antonio office.

Recognizing that the demands of our clients had assumed international proportion, Jackson Walker in 1994 was one of the founding members of GlobalawSM, a world-wide network of law firms with offices throughout the U.S. and in over 60 foreign countries.

In 1996, Jackson Walker further expanded its statewide coverage by opening an office in Austin. The firm's presence in the capitol city was significantly strengthened on January 1, 1999, when the attorneys of Small, Craig and Werkenthin joined Jackson Walker. Small, Craig & Werkenthin had served the business community of the Southwest for over 60 years. The attorneys of Small, Craig and Werkenthin played an important part in the economic growth of Texas through their role in the development of some of the most important legislation and regulations affecting industries throughout the state. Ed Small, son of the late C.C. Small, Jr. and grandson of the late C.C. Small, Sr., is currently a partner with Jackson Walker and continues to practice regulatory and legislative law. The merger of the two firms also resulted in the addition of Jackson Walker's San Angelo location, where Small, Craig & Werkenthin previously maintained an office.

In late 1999, Jackson Walker's San Antonio office welcomed the attorneys of Miller, Sisson, Chapman and Nash, the Alamo City's oldest firm focusing strictly on intellectual property matters.

On April 1, 2001, Dallas-based Cohan, Simpson, Cowlishaw & Wulff joined Jackson Walker adding 16 attorneys whose expertise was in commercial, employment, and antitrust litigation as well as telecommunications regulatory law. During that same time, Gresham, Davis, Gregory, Worthy and Moore which was dedicated to handling business transactions including real estate and bankruptcy joined Jackson Walker in San Antonio. Gresham, Davis, which was one of San Antonio’s oldest firms, founded in the 1880's, added a new dimension to the office with their bankruptcy expertise.

Today, Jackson Walker offers expertise in virtually every area of the law through a strong regional base of over 300 attorneys in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Angelo, and San Antonio. The continual development of a broad base of practice areas has enabled the firm to attract an outstanding group of clients including Fortune 500 companies, multi-national corporations, major financial institutions, and a wide range of publicly traded corporations and closely held businesses.

As part of the firm’s commitment to excellence, a common characteristic stands out: a focus on practical, cost-effective solutions to legal problems that add value and emphasize what works for our clients based on the highest professional standards.
