Farmers State Bank

History:

In 1909, F. L. Berry and a partner, John Wiley, opened a private bank, The Farmers Bank.  Six years later, in 1915, The Farmers State Bank of West Salem was organized and incorporated.  The original directors were F. L. Berry, W. H. Horst, N. W. Zimmerman, J. H. Wiley, J. A. Hines, W. S. Zehner, O. B. Dreibelbis, J. L. Van Evera, and S. A. Read.  On January 11, 1922, the bank purchased the Bank of West Salem which had been started in 1902 by Samuel Wood.

Charles McBride helped and guided the bank for over 40 years.  He was first employed in December 1919.  He became assistant cashier, cashier, and then Vice President in 1947.  He continued serving as Cashier and Vice President until his death in 1964.  He also served as President of the Ohio Bankers Association.   His wife, Bessie (Bahl) McBride, began her banking career in 1910 at The Farmers Bank and continued as an employee when it incorporated as a state bank in 1915.  Her career lasted 65 years until her retirement in 1975.

In the early 60’s new offices, a night depository and drive-in window were built.   In 1991 a one bank holding company, Community Independent Bancorp, Inc, was formed.  The Farmers State Bank of West Salem became Farmers State Bank (FSB) at that time.  Extensive remodeling was done in 1998 to better utilize the available space.  The main entrance was moved from the front of the building to the side where a new lobby area greeted customers.

The first Branch was opened on Baney Road in Ashland on April 1, 1991.  A second Branch was opened in Ashland on East Main Street in September 1998.  FSB moved into Eastern Wayne County in 2005 with a branch office in Marshallville. Rittman was the location of the latest Branch which opened in 2006.

Farmers State Bank has always strived to maintain both old-fashioned customer service, as well as, technology to allow customers to access their account information at anytime.  FSB now offers ATM’s, Telephone Banking and Internet Banking with free Online Bill Pay.

The current directors are Chairman Donald Buren, Marlene Barkheimer, Donald Bowman, Daniel McNaull, Carlton Schlatter, Michael Welch, and R. Scott Wertz.
