Overview:
Founded in 2000, Southern Capitol Ventures is an active venture capital firm headquartered in Raleigh, NC. We focus on providing capital to leading technology companies in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic.
We are currently investing out of Fund II and our initial investments range in size from as little as $75k to as much as $1 million. Typically, we invest $500k initially and $1.5 million over the life of the company. While we focus on early-stage companies we will always consider later stage opportunities and spinouts where we partner with larger VC funds.
We deploy a very disciplined investment strategy, partnering with companies where we have significant knowledge and domain expertise. These industries include: e-commerce, software, digital media, wireless and healthcare IT. We are often the first investor to become involved with a company.
We also limit the number of companies in which we invest to ensure that our portfolio companies get the attention they need to succeed. Our unique approach gives us one of the highest partner-to-company ratios in the industry.
Helping Secure Strong Co-Investors
We believe finding the right investment partners is important. Because of that, we are active in introducing and recruiting other co-investors if needed. Some of our co-investors in current portfolio companies include: Advanced Technology Ventures, Benchmark Capital, Carl Icahn, eBay, H.I.G. Ventures, Intel, Kodiak Venture Partners, NEA, Novak Biddle Venture Partners, Polaris Venture Partners and Technology Crossover Ventures.
Our Investment Criteria
Selected portfolio companies typically meet the following criteria with what we call "The Three M's":
Management.
We are looking for experienced, creative and driven leadership. They should share our passion for success and have significant knowledge of their markets and technologies as well as proven business management experience in an entrepreneurial environment.
Market.
The market that the idea or company is targeting should be large, growing rapidly and sustainable. The company must possess either a first-mover advantage, have a product or service that is remarkably distinct from the competition or addresses a critical market need. We also look for shifts in the market that may benefit the company. The company also needs to operate in an industry we understand and can add significant value.
Momentum.
We look for momentum in the business. This doesn't have to be revenue. Just as examples, it can be customer wins, user growth, key hires, adding new critical board members or press recognition. We want to see that the business isn't the same today as it was even just 90 days ago.
It's easy to reach us! Just call or email. Or have someone that knows us make the introduction.
Commitment to Entrepreneurs
Our partners have extensive experience in the early-stage market as investors, entrepreneurs and executives. Our goal is to support a company's management team and our work with a company begins well before our initial investment. We help entrepreneurs manage their companies by providing strategic advice on operational, marketing, sales and fundraising issues. We often become involved very early in a company's development and help open doors to potential customers, partners, key hires and other investors.
Additionally, our strength comes from our successful Advisory Board, our strategic community involvement and our well-known investors.
More importantly, we make sure our network is readily accessible to all of our portfolio companies. |
