History:
Winona National Bank was originally established as the Winona Savings Bank in July 1874. In 1916, the historic downtown building at 204 Main Street was erected and housed both the Winona Savings Bank and the newly formed Winona National Bank. Engraved on the front of the building is "Winona Savings Bank," as the two had not merged at the time of construction. Later, the two banks merged to form Winona National and Savings Bank. In 2001, Winona National and Savings Bank merged with Town & Country State Bank of Winona to form the current Winona National Bank.
Over the years, Winona National Bank has had several prominent presidents, including William Mitchell, for whom William Mitchell Law School in St. Paul is named, and William Windom, a former United States Treasury Secretary.
Our downtown office at 204 Main Street was designed by prominent architect George Maher of Chicago, who also designed the Watkins building in Winona. Our downtown office is a favorite of visitors to Winona. The building, with its Egyptian Revival style and Prairie School influences also serves as a museum, featuring its architecture, Italian marble, original steel vault, original furniture, and Tiffany stained glass windows. The building also displays the gun collection and African safari trophies of the bank’s original owners. |
