History:

In 1967 application was made to charter a state bank at the current Johnson Street site of American Bank in Fond du Lac. There were seven organizers of the bank consisting of: George F. Hutter Jr., Dr. Harvey Sharpe Jr., Attorney John J. Schneider, George P. Andrew, Wilbur Pfeifer, Peter E. Stone, and Steven B. Stone. These individuals also made up the board of directors of the bank. The decision to charter a bank was because of the development on West Johnson Street and a bank located on the west side would be a real convenience to the community. Thus, the American Bank of Fond du Lac was born.

Construction of the bank began in early 1968. The design was that of a one-story 4,000 square foot building. It was constructed by Hutter Construction Company of Fond du Lac and decorated in an Early American motif. Steven B. Stone was named president.

The bank's physical size was increased by 77 percent in 1983 with an additional 3,634 square feet added on the first floor. The loan department was relocated, customer service was moved and added space became available to the bookkeeping and check processing departments in the lower level.

Dale G. Brooks was named the second president of American Bank in 1984. Dale brought with him over 25 years of banking experience. Assets at this time were approximately $40 million and increased to over $135 million under his management.

American Bank offered the first drive-up ATM in Fond du Lac County in 1985. This led to further expansion throughout the years with placements of ATMs at other sites.

American Bank acquired the Brownsville location in November of 1994. Because of the growth to Dodge County, the bank then changed its name to American Bank rather than American Bank of Fond du Lac. The purchase of this office provided the bank the opportunity for growth with the added benefit of serving additional communities.

In 1994, American Bank began servicing its own fixed rate residential mortgage loans. This allows our mortgage customers the ability to obtain personalized assistance with their mortgage from loan personnel at any of our six locations. Currently, over 2000 customers are taking advantage of this service.

Ground was broken in January of 1998 for the construction of a new office in Mayville. With two offices already located in Dodge County and the rapidly growing Mayville area, the new office became a natural fit for further expansion of American Bank. Completion of the 4,296 square foot bank occurred in July of 1998 and the facility was opened with five employees.

Dale G. Brooks was elected Chairman of the Board and James R. Chatterton was elected president of American Bank in 1998. Jim Chatterton is the third president of American Bank since its inception over 35 years ago.

In May of 1999, American Bank purchased offices in Omro in Winnebago County and Princeton in Green Lake County. With this addition, the banks assets grew to approximately $150 million.

American Bank currently has assets of approximately $220 million, and employs 70 people in five offices located in Fond du Lac, Brownsville, Mayville, Omro, and Princeton.
