History:

On December 8, 1967 River Valley Bank opened its doors in a temporary structure at 1130 E. Grand Ave. in Rothschild, WI. The structure was a home on the property and would house the new bank while the permanent facility was being built.

The vision for River Valley Bank was to build personal relationships with its customers in order to better understand their needs and provide them with service standards that were unique in the industry. That vision remains today.

It is that philosophy that attracted Ron and Kay Nicklaus to River Valley Bank in the early 1980s. The Nicklaus family were farmers from the Tug Lake area in Central Wisconsin, and they had become the nation’s largest producer and harvester of green beans. Ron knew from his experience as a business owner that the relationship between a bank and a business was critical to the success of any business. Ron had always had an interest in banking and decided to purchase a majority of the River Valley Bank stock in 1983. The fit was a good one, and he became Board Chairman in 1984.

Ron and Kay’s oldest son, Todd Nicklaus, joined the bank in 1990 and was named President in 1993 and Chairman of the Board in 2006. In 1998 their younger son, Greg Nicklaus, joined the bank as Executive Vice President. Todd maintains offices in the bank’s Administrative Center in Wausau and original branch in Rothschild, and Greg’s office is located in the bank’s Minocqua location. Both Todd and Greg are actively involved with the bank making it truly a family owned and operated financial institution.

Since its beginning in 1967 with one location in Rothschild, WI, River Valley Bank has grown to 18 locations in North and Central Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
