The First National Bank of Johnson

History:

In the late 1800’s, the town of Johnson served as a midway stop on the Burlington Railroad between Tecumseh and Auburn.  The arrival of the railroad was a financial blessing for many of Johnson’s early settlers.  Throughout its early history, a group of Johnson’s residents became less and less satisfied with the banking services they were receiving.  They felt they deserved more.  It was their desire to receive outstanding customer service that lead to our beginning…

On May 17, 1906, the First National Bank of Johnson was founded.  The original stockholders included:  Edward M. Boyd, Robert C. Boyd, Franz F. Moerer, Paul Walkenhorst, Daniel Casey, Herman J. Holtgrewe, Henry L. Young, Charles M. Welton, Fred W. Holtgrewe, Israel W. Engle, Herman Rademacher, Henry A. Stutheit, Fred Ehlers, George W. Dominey, Johann Herman Antholz, George Ihrig, Frederick Parker, Henry Rohrs, Henry Oestmann, Henry F. Moerer, P.J. Nayler, and Frank C. Gilbert.  These gentlemen collectively contributed $25,000 in capital to establish the bank.  With the exception of Edward & Robert Boyd, all the stockholders were local farmers and merchants.  The Boyd’s owned a bank in Auburn, and their assistance helped the others obtain the national bank charter.

Originally, the bank was located on the east side of Main Street in Johnson.  In 1908 the bank moved to its present location on the west side of Main Street.  The building was added onto in 1968 to include extra office space and an additional vault.  In 1983 the west end of the building was expanded to offer a drive-up teller window.

In an effort to better meet bank customers’ needs, Michael Casey established Casey Agency, Inc. in 1984.  The agency continues to fulfill customer demands by offering all types of insurance through multiple providers.  During 1991 First National Johnson Bancshares, Inc. was formed to more effectively market the bank’s shares of stock.

In 1997 the bank expanded its operations by purchasing a branch office in Auburn, Nebraska.  During April of 2002, the branch operations were moved to the present office on J Street.

The First National Bank of Johnson celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2006.

Over the years, five generations of the Casey family have been employed at the bank.  Daniel Casey was one of the original stockholders and the bank’s first President.  Madison “Mac” Casey served as the bank’s Cashier until his death.  D. Clarke Casey performed the Cashier duties and later served as President until his death.  Michael Casey has served as the bank’s current President since 1983.  Joseph Casey has worked full time in the bank since 2005.

The First National Bank of Johnson’s original stockholders established the bank with one main principle in mind:  people deserve outstanding service.  This principle remains one of our main goals.  We pledge ourselves each day to work towards satisfying every customer.  At the First National Bank of Johnson you will get the outstanding service you deserve!
