History:

Opened in April of 1894 The Bank of Swanton was one of the few rural community banks in Nebraska that did not close during the Great Depression of the 1930s. While in Plymouth, the first bank was opened in 1893 and named The Bank of Plymouth. Due to the Great Depression, the State Banking Board wanted to consolidate and reduce the number of state banks, so in 1928, Farmers State Bank, a charter bank that started in 1912 merged with The Bank of Plymouth. In 1933, FDR declared a bank holiday and Farmers State Bank was one of only 120 banks allowed to reopen for business in Nebraska without restrictions and continued to operate successfully. In 1984, a father and son, Dean and Thomas Bass purchased The Bank of Swanton, and in February of 1996 they also purchased Farmers State Bank in Plymouth. With this purchase in 1996 the two banks became First Tri-County Bank.
