York State Bank and Trust Company

Overview:

York State Bank opened it's doors to the public on July 15, 1943.  During the grand opening an ad from York State Bank in a local paper stated "Large or small, your business will be appreciated and every modern banking service will be at your command."   We still feel that way in today's growing economy.  We look for ways to improve our relationship with our customers and to make your banking easy.  While in 1943 we advertised lending money for coal, with all of the advances of today’s world, it's much more common to make personal loans for computers or electronic equipment.

Between 1984 and 1986, two local banks, the Gresham State Bank, and Fillmore County Bank merged with us to become York State Bank branches.  In 1993 new construction added a second drive-in facility at our Plaza branch.

We look for ways to grow and be there for our customers!  If you have any suggestions on how York State Bank can better serve you with this web site, please e-mail us. Your comments are very valuable as we expand with technology.
History:

In 1943, Dean Sack obtained a charter for a new bank and opened its doors on July 13 with only $65,000 in total deposits.  Just after opening York State Bank, Sack chartered the Henderson State Bank in October 1944 and another bank in Benedict the same year.  He later acquired banks in Gresham, Geneva, Grafton and Loup City.  Sack served as president of the York State Bank and later as Chairman of the Board until his death in 1997.  In 1944, Sack helped create the York Industrial Board on which he served for 52 years, until 1996.  The board was credited with attracting one of York’s first major industries, York Cold Storage Co., in 1944.  Later the board, which would become the York County Economic Development Inc., helped bring other industries to the area, including the York Packing Co., Gerber Foods, Mid-American Coop Cheese Co., Pioneer Hi-Bred International and High Plains Corp. Ethanol Plant.

In addition to his contributions to York County industry, Sack also was a major player in bringing irrigation to farms in the county.  In the 1950s, his company, Meridian Construction, was responsible for surveying land and drilling and financing irrigation wells throughout the area.

Sack was also a generous financial contributor to the community.  He donated funds for an airport expansion project, for numerous economic development efforts, and to education.  In 1995, he donated the Dean Sack Hall of Science to York College. Sack took great pride in the quality of the farmland and farmers in the county. “York County has, without a doubt, the best farmers in the state,” Sack said in an interview in 1993. “The farmers just seem to do a better job in York County than anywhere else.”

He passed away on August 17, 1997.York State Bank & Trust Company was sold to the Lauritzen Corporation in 1995. York State Bank continues to support the education, industrial and agricultural aspects of York County.
