Overview:

The bank was founded in 1907, the year Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory united as the Sate of Oklahoma, by a group of prominent members of the Cherokee tribe.In 1996 the ownership of the bank changed only for the fourth time in its history when another group of prominent members of the Cherokee tribe headed by Gary D. Chapman acquired the bank.

Gary Chapman has been involved in Cherokee County banking and has been a leader in community affairs for the past forty years.He has been elected to four terms on the Cherokee Tribal Council and served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Cherokee nation of Oklahoma. Chapman also served as President of the Cherokee National Historic Society.

Community reinvestment is nothing new to Bank of Cherokee County.Since the bank’s founding at the turn of the century, its mission has been to serve its community.As the only bank in the town of Hulbert, Oklahoma and with branches in Tahlequah and Park Hill, Oklahoma, Bank of Cherokee County sees its responsibilities extending beyond what are usually thought of as “normal” banking functions.Bank of Cherokee County, as the largest commercial entity in town, takes the lead in community affairs.

The bank played an active role in establishing the Hulbert Area Food Program for the Elderly, which serves a number of qualified citizens.The bank has established the Hulbert Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships based on academic achievement and leadership qualities to students graduating from Hulbert High School.The bank supports the Cherokee County Junior Livestock Show and the bank purchases many of their prize-winning animals.
