Bank of Birch Tree

History:

Charles Bowden was born in England, one of 12 children. He had to leave home at ten-years-old to make his own way because his folks couldn’t afford to look after him. He got a job in the import/export business, and eventually worked in an office. He had good penmanship, a knack for numbers, and a keen sense of business.

Charles married Florence Boram in England, and then they moved to the Ozarks in 1900. Charles opened an insurance and real estate business in Birch Tree in 1908. This was also the same year he signed the City of Birch Tree’s incorporation papers.

In 1913, Charles and a group of businessmen opened the Citizens State Bank. His son, D.C. Bowden, returned from working in Kansas City to join the Bank in 1927. In 1929, Citizens State Bank merged with Farmers’ State Bank to become the Bank of Birch Tree. During the 1930s, Charles Bowden bought controlling interest in the Bank of Birch Tree and was the chief operating officer until his death in 1958.

D.C. Bowden took charge as the banking business transformed from the Industrial Age to the Information Age, and he was responsible for moving the Bank to an improved facility at the current location.

D.C.’s son, D. Doug Bowden, joined the Bank in 1955 after serving in the Korean War and finishing his college degree. D. Doug is now leading the Bank of Birch Tree as Chairman of the Board.

D. Doug’s son, David Bowden, joined the Bank in 1978 and owns the insurance agency started by Charles over 100 years ago. D. Doug’s daughter, Katherine L. Bowden, joined the Bank in 1984 and is the current President and Chief Operating Officer. D. Doug’s grandchildren, Sarah Bowden and Greg Johnson make up the fifth generation of family bankers.

When the Bowdens sunk their roots and finances into Birch Tree soil, they literally became part of the community and have lived its history ever since. The Bank has been a part of community activities in Birch Tree over the last hundred years.

Ten-year-old Charles Bowden took his fate in his own hands, and braved the world, to eventually create a successful future in the Birch Tree Community and to help others in the community to achieve their own American Dream.
