History:
The Clarence State bank received its charter on March 31, 1945 and then opened its doors for business the following week on April 7th. It continues to be located at its original site on the corner of Chestnut and Center in downtown Clarence. Floyd Schoonover's career in banking spanned 65 years, having started in 1916 with his Uncle in the Farmer's Bank of Pollock, MO. He continued a successful career in various communities, Jamestown, Perry, & Thayer as well as organizing the Keyes State Bank of Keyes, OK. The Clarence State Bank began with 113 charter stockholders and $32,500 Capital surplus and Undivided Profit. Floyd served on the Board of Directors and as the bank's President until his passing on May 31, 1981. Ellis L. Schoonover joined the bank in 1946 after completing a degree in Business Administration from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Ellis interrupted his college studies during WWII and served in the Army Air Corps as a B-17 navigator with the 306th BG. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for completing 35 missions. Upon return, he joined Floyd as a father-son team and served as Cashier and then Exec V. President. Ellis completed his career serving as President until his retirement in 1991. Ellis Lee Schoonover, II joined the bank in 1975 after graduating from Northeast Missouri State University (Truman State University) with a degree in Accounting. He has served as Asst. Cashier, Cashier, and Exec. V. President. In 1991, Lee was appointed as President and has served in that capacity since. From June, 1975 thru May, 1981, 3 generations (father, son and grandson) served the Bank and Clarence community together. As of December 31, 2009, Capital and Undivided Profits have increased to $3,868,000.
Floyd believed in community and youth, sponsoring many activities such as 4-H and FFA. The Clarence State bank continues this tradition, being a strong advocate for youth activities and education. As a "locally" owned and managed institution, we form close relationships with our customers. Our staff and Board of Directors actively participate in many activities and are leaders in the Clarence community. We are truly a "Home Town" Bank with our roots growing deep since our beginnings in 1945. Our staff at the Clarence State Bank is excited about the opportunity to continue to serve you, our most valued asset. |
