History:
Commerce Bank traces its roots back to 1865 when Francis Reid Long came to Kansas City with $10,000 capital and started a bank, the Kansas City Savings Association. By 1890, the bank, then named the National Bank of Commerce, was the largest bank west of Chicago.
Today, Commerce Bank, a Missouri-based company with headquarters in Kansas City and St. Louis, operates in five states: Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Oklahoma and Colorado. Commerce Bank, with over $18.8 billion in assets, provides financial services for businesses and individuals.
Commerce Bank has always been an innovator. In 1928, the Company began the first 24-hour transit department in the country. This helped speed up the transit of checks between banks. The 1960s saw the introduction of the first full-scale International Department and, in 1984, Special Connections, the first card in the market to have the combined features of a credit card and ATM card, was introduced.
Excellence has been recognized by the industry. In 1989, Commerce was honored to be the only bank in Missouri to receive the Presidential “ E Star ” award recognizing the Bank's contribution to the promotion of export activity. In July of 1991, Commerce was ranked “ Best Overall Performer ” by United States Banker for an unprecedented second year in a row. Commerce also earned the top safety ranking for the fifth year in a row.
Money Magazine named Commerce Bank the “ Best Bank in Missouri ” in 1995, citing the attractiveness of consumer accounts and services. A 1997 Dean Witter report named Commerce as one of the top 10 banks in the nation for technology. Commerce Bancshares was ranked seventh among the Top 150 publicly traded bank companies in Bank Director magazine’s 2008 Bank Performance Scorecard.
Today the bank serves customers from over 370 locations in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Oklahoma and Colorado using a variety of delivery platforms including an expansive ATM network, full-featured Online Banking and a central contact center. |
