Bank of New Madrid

History:

The Bank of New Madrid was incorporated under the laws of Missouri and a Certificate of Incorporation issued August 15, 1934 authorizing the bank to commence business. There were five members of the original board of directors: Sam L. Hunter, Sr., R. H. Bierschwal, Vincent H. Rost, W. P. Hunter and J. P. Hunter. Sam L. Hunter, Sr. was chairman of the board and also the first president of the bank. At the time of inception, the Bank of New Madrid had approximately five employees with manual typewriters, adding machines and posting machines to assist in the daily work. Electric typewriters and adding machines, as well as proof machines and photo copiers, came much later. The latest addition, computer and data processing equipment as well as electronic handling of transactions, revolutionalized the banking industry and the entire business world.
In November, 1945 Sam L. Hunter, Jr. joined the bank as vice president, and in 1962 he was promoted to president after his father retired, a position he held until 1995 when health problems surfaced a few years before his death in November, 1999. Sam L. Hunter, Jr.'s banking career spanned a period of more than fifty years and he initiated many of the changes that took place and affected the area during those years.

In 1995, Sam L. Hunter, III. was elected president of the Bank of New Madrid, a position he still holds. Other officers include Marty McReynolds, Executive Vice President; Marty Boner, Harriette Myers and Heidi Williams, Vice Presidents; Heidi Williams, Operations Officer; and Tracey Albright, Cashier at the New Madrid location. Managers at the other locations are Marie Gill at Portageville and Hazel Smith at Lilbourn. The board of directors now consists of ten members: Sam L. Hunter, III., Harriette H. Myers, Heidi H. Williams, Sam M. Hunter, Joseph D. Hunter, Charles E. Palmer, Marty McReynolds, Mary Pat Hunter, Lawrence H. Rost and Marty Boner.

Throughout the years, bank personnel gradually increased and culminated to over forty employees in 2006, however, within the last year, bank personnel has decreased to just over 30 employees at all three locations. The bank does not perceive this as a negative aspect but rather as a positive step guided by the world of technology. The bank has found if an employee leaves, it may not always be necessary to replace the employee. With the aid of technology it is developing ways to become more efficient with less people.
The banking industry is consistently raising the bar. To keep ahead of the bar it is key to stay up-to-date with the leading edge of change. The Bank of New Madrid makes every effort to encourage and promote growth and progress within the banking industry in the hopes of offering its customers the best banking experience, but at the same time remembering its small town bank motto: A Real Community Bank: "Large Enough to Serve You, Strong Enough to Protect You and Small Enough to Know You."

The officers of the Bank of New Madrid give credit for its continued growth to the loyal customers and employees who have made this possible. In April of 2008 the bank showed their appreciation to their customers in a weeklong community appreciation extravaganza. This was the second year the bank held such an event to say thank you to its customers and community. Each branch awarded daily giveaways to anyone visiting the bank and held eight customer daily drawings for larger prizes. The larger prizes were for gift certificates purchased by the bank from local businesses in all three communities. The bank felt this was a personal way to show their appreciation to their business customers. The daily customer drawing tickets from the entire week were collected on Friday and a brand new laptop was awarded to a lucky customer at each branch.

On Thursday evening, the bank's very own president, Sam Hunter, barbequed throughout the night to have barbeque ready to be chopped and made into sandwiches on Friday morning for the last day's grand finale. All bank employees pitched in to chop and make sandwiches to begin serving at 10:30 a.m. Customers were out in full force to enjoy a FREE lunch, which consisted of a tasty barbeque, a bag of chips and a soda. Fun was had by all, and plans were already formulating in bank personnel minds for CAW 2009.
In August of 2009, the Bank of New Madrid will have served the New Madrid county area for 75 years. The bank foresees 75 years to be a grand celebration and we hope you will continue to patron the Bank of New Madrid and come celebrate with us.
