History:

Boone County Bank, while being newly chartered in 1998, has a history dating back to 1902.

The Madison National Bank was chartered to do business on November 28, 1902. The bank first conducted business in a one story, one room store building. About 1906 a concrete block two story building was erected nearby on Main Street. The bank owned the North half of the ground floor. A three story brick, semi-fireproof building was constructed around 1918 in which the Madison National Bank did business until its consolidation with the Boone County Bank. This building is now Madison’s library. The founders of Madison National Bank were Julian Hill, F.C. Leftwich, Sid and Cecil Croft, brothers from Virginia, J.M. Hopkins, Sam Bradley, and Doutin Stollings.

The first Boone County Bank was chartered to do business December 17, 1907. The Boone County Bank constructed a two story semi-fireproof building in the early Twenties across from Ellis Department Store. They conducted business on the first floor of this building until they merged with the Madison National Bank. The founders of Boone County Bank were Winfield Turley, M.A. Byrnside, Etwell Price, Q.L. Stewart, and Dell Hill.

On May 31, 1929, the two banks became one and was named Boone National Bank. The newly formed bank withstood the stock market crash and the great depression. Business was conducted at the Madison National location and the bank moved to the corner of Josephine Avenue and State Street during September 1964 where it remains today.

The bank and our community were witness to several innovations in Boone County banking during 1985. On April 15, Boone National Bank opened its Van Branch, which is located on route 85, at Van, West Virginia, 12 miles from the main office. This branch office was extremely well received by our customers in the Pond Fork area and continues to be very successful. Another first was the installation of an off-premise automatic teller machine which was placed in the new Black’s Foodland store located between the towns of Madison and Danville.

The year 1986 held even greater promise for Boone National Bank. A merger with Key Centurion Bancshares, Inc., West Virginia’s largest bank holding company, was approved by our Board of Directors and took place in September of 1986. The merger proved very successful, allowing us the benefits of a large holding company while enjoying the atmosphere and control of a small community bank.

On May 3, 1993, Bank One Corporation purchased Key Centurion Bancshares and Boone National Bank became Bank One, West Virginia, NA, Boone. The bank operated as a branch of Bank One until June 29, 1998 when Premier Financial Bancorp, Inc. of Georgetown, Kentucky bought the bank and chartered it as a new entity. The bank was renamed Boone County Bank, Inc. and once again became a fully functioning bank.

Our rapidly expanding bank opened a loan production office in Logan, WV, on April 15, 1999. Only one year later a full service branch has replaced the Loan Production Office. In November of 2000 our expansion continued with the opening of another full service branch know as the West Hamlin Branch located in the Lincoln Plaza at Branchland in Lincoln County.
