Garrison State Bank & Trust

History:

Garrison State Bank came into being on October 31, 1935 when the Farmers State Bank of Gladstone moved its headquarters to Garrison, changed its name to Garrison State Bank, and assumed the deposits and liabilities of the First National Bank. The total assets of the bank at its origin were $134,000. The Dickinson shareholders sold their interests to Hans A. Fischer and G.A. Lindell of Washburn in 1941. Mr. Fischer had interests in the Farmers Security Bank of Washburn and Mr. Lindell was a Washburn attorney. Mr. Lindell met an untimely death during World War II and the Fischer family assumed the Lindell stock. Henry T. Holtz had been the bank's manager and a stockholder in the bank from its inception. He continued to manage the bank for Mr. Fischer until his death. On November 24, 1956 Hans Fischer sold his controlling interest in Garrison State Bank to Wayne and Bernice Stroup; Wayne's father, Robert Stroup; and brother, George Stroup.

Wayne and Bernice Stroup moved to Garrison and Wayne assumed the management of the bank. The assets of the bank have grown from $2 million dollars at the time the Stroup family acquired Garrison State Bank to its current $55 million. To accommodate this growth there have been changes including the building of a new facility and several additions and remodeling projects. Various services have also been added at the bank location including trust, insurance, and investment services. Although the bank had offered trust services for many years, it changed its name to Garrison State Bank and Trust in 1998 to accentuate this new segment of its business.
