Shearman & Sterling continues to consolidate its position as the leading international law firm in the Brazilian market. We advise our clients on a wide range of transactions—from debt and equity financings to mergers and acquisitions and fund formation. During the IPO equity boom in 2005–2007, we ranked first in Brazilian equity offerings, both in dollar volume and in number of completed deals. In 2008, we received various awards as the leading firm for mergers and acquisitions in Brazil.

We opened our São Paulo office in 2004 to provide more efficient service to our clients. Our resident partners lead a team of experienced lawyers—all are qualified to practice US law and are fluent in English and Portuguese.

From this office, our team works closely with our colleagues around the world. Founded in 1873, Shearman & Sterling is one of the world’s truly international law firms. Approximately 900 attorneys work out of 20 offices on four continents, advising clients on US, English, German, Italian and French law.

The São Paulo office was a logical next step in our long history of involvement with Brazil, dating back to the 1930s. In recent decades we advised on the privatizations of various state-owned companies including Embraer, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce and Usiminas. We represented Banco Itaú in its US$ 3.3 billion purchase of Bank of America’s operations in Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. We also represented BM&F in its US$ 1.2 billion cross investment with the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and we acted as advisors to Citigroup on the US$ 1.5 billion corporate restructuring of Credicard.
