German Development Cooperation (GTZ)

Overview:

Sustainable development has become a priority issue on the agenda of the Ethiopian government with poverty reduction and economic growth as core objectives. However, the country faces a number of development constraints, including droughts, a heavy dependence on agriculture and widespread mismanagement of natural resources. More over, the low level of education has been hampering development as the economy is lacking skilled man power. Whereas the majority of the population (80%) lives at the countryside, Ethiopian cities grow at fast pace. This is causing new challenges in terms of service delivery and infrastructure for citizens.
Based on the agreement between the German and the Ethiopian governments, GTZ’s activities focus on the following priority areas to overcome the country’s major development constraints:

   * Sustainable Utilization of Natural Resources for Improved Food Security,
   * Urban governance and decentralisation,
   * Capacity building in engineering and private sector development for sustainable economic growth.

GTZ has been working in Ethiopia for more than 30 years on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
Along with the bilateral cooperation on behalf of the BMZ, the GTZ Division “International Services” is working in commission of the Ethiopian government and various international organizations, such as the World Bank. In fact, the International Services office in Addis Ababa is the largest worldwide. GTZ IS is implementing the University Capacity Building Program, the Ethiopian Social Accountability Program and various other projects.

For maximum impact GTZ cooperates with various German development assistance institutions, namely the KfW development bank, the German Development Service (DED), Centrum for international Migration and Development (CIM), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Capacity Building International (InWEnt), the Senior Expert Service (SES), political foundations, the private sector (PPP), chambers and associations.

Since 1995, GTZ has maintained an office in Addis Ababa and in 2006 the German development organizations GTZ/CIM, KfW and DED moved into the “German House” in Addis Ababa. But, due to space constraints, not all GTZ offices are in one building. GTZ International Services maintains offices in a separate building in Addis Ababa.
