History:
Prosper Bank has a history as rich and longstanding as the community of Prosper, Texas in which the first bank was founded. In 1903, the Continental Bank & Trust Company was established by H. H. Wilkinson of Fort Worth, Texas to serve the booming agriculture industry of the area. In 1905 the State of Texas adopted state banking laws, and the name of the bank was changed to Continental State Bank.
For the next fifteen years, Mr. Wilkinson managed the bank and employed Mr. U.N. Clary of Prosper as Cashier of the bank. In 1920, Mr. Clary purchased the bank and changed the name to Prosper State Bank. Under the leadership of Mr. Clary and his team of bankers, Prosper State Bank provided banking services to the residents and businesses in the area. During these years, the banking industry experienced prosperous times as well as the stock market crash in 1929, a period of history reflecting the demise of many banks. However, Prosper State Bank remained successful and continued to serve the communities around it.
The year 1965 marked another milestone in the history of the bank when Mr. Charles J. Winikates of Dallas, Texas purchased the bank from Mr. Clary. Subsequently, in 1989 Mr. Winikates opened a branch of the Prosper State Bank in Frisco, Texas to service the tremendous growth seen in that community as well. The Winikates family owned and operated the bank until February 2006, when the bank was sold to Prosper Bancshares, Inc. and became Prosper Bank. Prosper Bancshares, Inc is a Texas bank holding company that is supported by a group of investors who are committed to community banking.
Prosper Bank has been a cornerstone to the community since the inception of both the bank and the town and stands for those traditions, families, and businesses which formed the character and reputation of this area in Collin County. Consider, for a moment, just the growth in Prosper from a population of 900 less than twenty years ago to a population of well over 5,500 in 2006! The permanence of long-time residents and businesses, coupled with the explosive influx of both, attests to the stamina of this community, its values, its commitment to community and family values and goals.
Prosper Bank has had the honor of sharing in the evolution of that history, originally as the only financial institution locally and, currently as it is poised to be the premier community bank serving Prosper and the surrounding towns.
