Overview: 

Triodos Bank is one of Europe’s leading ethical banks. Established in 1980 in The Netherlands, with a UK office following in 1995, Triodos Bank enables money to work for positive social, environmental and cultural change.

Triodos offers a comprehensive range of banking services for social businesses, charities and groups along with a variety of savings accounts for individuals. Triodos Bank only lends money to organisations and businesses pursuing positive social, environmental and cultural goals.

Triodos Bank is a public bank with thousands of customers and shareholders. Our principles and independence are guaranteed through a special share-holding trust which protects the social and environmental aims of the bank. We have offices in the UK, Belgium, Spain and The Netherlands as well as an International Development Investment Unit which finances fair trade and microfinance in developing countries.
History: 

1968
An economist (Adriaan Deking Dura), a professor in tax law (Dieter Brüll), a senior organisational consultant (Lex Bos) and a banker (Rudolf Mees) form a study group to see how money can be managed in a socially conscious way.

1971
Triodos Foundation is founded to mobilise gifts and loans for promising new social initiatives and enterprises.

1973
Triodos Guarantee Fund is founded to issue guarantees for innovative companies and institutions to help them to access bank funding.

1980
Triodos Bank NV is established with EUR 540,000 in start-up share capital and a full banking licence from the Dutch central bank. It starts operating in The Netherlands.

1983
Triodos Insurance is founded. In partnership with a health insurance company, it develops and launches Medio Polis, one of the first policies to also provide coverage for certain complementary medical treatments.

1986
Following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, Triodos Ventures is created to help finance the then risky development of wind energy projects. Two years later, the first wind farms are built.

1990
Triodos Bank launches The Netherlands’ first green investment fund, Biogrond Beleggingsfonds. The Fund is listed on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange. Triodos Bank and insurance company Delta Lloyd launch the Added Value Policy, the first Dutch combined life insurance and pension insurance product to screen its investments using social and environmental criteria.

1993
Triodos Bank’s Belgian branch opens for business. The Triodos Wind Fund, an investment fund for private investors, is launched in The Netherlands.

1994
Triodos Bank launches the first Triodos North-South investment funds in The Netherlands in partnership with the Doen Foundation /National Postal Code Lottery and the Hivos Foundation (Humanist Institute for Development Cooperation). In Belgium, Triodos Bank sets up the Alterfin cooperative, as a joint venture with the non-profit organisation Vereniging Zonder Winstoogmerk (VZW), 11.11.11. and other NGOs. These funds focus on microfinance funding in developing countries and fair trade finance.

1995
Triodos Bank opens its UK office in Bristol, and launches The Wind Fund - later to evolve into Triodos Renewables. In The Netherlands, Triodos Bank is actively involved in the introduction of a fiscal ‘green scheme’ (‘groenregeling’) that proves to be highly successful. In a related move, the Green Investment Fund is launched.

1996
Triodos Match starts operating in the UK, giving private investors the opportunity to invest directly in companies selected by Triodos Bank.

1997
The Triodos Added Value Fund is launched and listed on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange.

1998
In The Netherlands, the three Triodos ‘green funds’ merge to form the Triodos Green Fund. The Solar Investment Fund is established to finance solar energy projects in developing countries. Triodos Research is founded to provide banks and pension funds with research about the social and environmental performance of listed companies.

2000
Triodos Bank co-founds the Solar Development Group. All Triodos bank’s offices are accredited with ISO 14001 status for environmental management. In The Netherlands, the Triodos Added Value Fund enables investors to choose between Equity, Bond and Mixed Funds.

2001
Triodos Venture Capital Fund is founded. In Belgium, the Triodos Values Fund is launched, with an International Equity Fund as its first portfolio. Triodos Climate Clearing House, a clearing house for CO2 emission credits, processes its first transactions.

2002
The Triodos Fair Share Fund is founded in The Netherlands, offering private individuals and institutions the chance to invest in microfinance institutions in developing countries. In Belgium, the Triodos Values Fund launches a European Bond Fund. In partnership with pension fund PGGM and Bank MeesPierson, Triodos Bank founds the Dutch Sustainability Research institute (DSR). DSR gathers data on the social and environmental policy of over 2,000 listed companies across the world.

2003
In Spain, Triodos Investments España begins work across the Iberian Peninsula, acting as an agent for Triodos Bank.

2004
Triodos Bank’s Spanish branch opens its doors. In The Netherlands, the Bank launches the first real estate fund investing exclusively in sustainable buildings. Triodos launches internet banking in The Netherlands, Belgium and Spain.

2005
Triodos Finanz GmbH, the Bank’s representative office in Frankfurt, opens its doors, marking the start of Triodos Bank’s activities in Germany. In Spain, Triodos Bank is a co-founder of Analistas Internacionales en Sostenibilidad (AIS), a research institute that examines the social and environmental performance policies of listed Spanish companies.

2006
Triodos Bank opens its international headquarters in The Netherlands. Triodos launches its first Luxembourg based investment fund, Triodos Renewables Europe Fund, to invest in European renewable energy projects. In The Netherlands, the Triodos Culture Fund is set up. This listed fund is the first Dutch investment fund to provide loans for the promotion of art and culture. In addition to their annual return, investors in this fund receive a tax incentive of up to 2.5% each year.

2007
Triodos Bank launches the Triodos Values Pioneer Fund. This fund is part of a second Luxembourg fund and incorporates Triodos Values Equity Fund and Triodos Values Bond Fund. Triodos Sustainable Real Estate Fund is listed at Euronext Fund Service, and Triodos Real Estate Development is launched in The Netherlands.
