Profile:
The HSBC Group is headquartered in London, with major, long-established businesses throughout the UK.
Personal financial services
The key component of the management of personal customers’ financial needs, or ‘wealth management’, is the provision of a full range of services to customers.
HSBC Bank plc is one of the UK’s principal clearing banks with a domestic network of some 1,670 branches. It provides such services as current and deposit accounts, short- and medium-term lending, credit cards, foreign currency and travellers’ cheques, international remittances and mortgages. To complement the branch network, banking via the telephone, internet and TV have become increasingly important alternative media for managing personal finances. For more affluent customers, the HSBC Premier service offers dedicated relationship management. HSBC’s First Direct division is the UK’s most recommended bank, offering multi-channel banking via the telephone, mobile phone and internet.
HSBC’s joint venture with Merrill Lynch provides multi-channel — online, telephone and face-to-face — investment and banking services to self-directed, affluent investors.
Commercial banking
HSBC Bank provides a full range of banking products and services to small and medium-sized enterprises. Relationship management — or community banking — is emphasised, whereby experienced managers are based in the branch network to provide fast local decision-making. Other delivery channels are electronic and telephone banking. The bank has developed an internet banking platform for commercial customers.
Corporate and institutional banking
HSBC provides a wide range of banking and financial services to top-tier European corporates, financial institutions and local operations of multinationals. Services include capital market, currency and interest rate risk management solutions, as well as other offerings from Investment Banking and Markets.
With its long-standing trade finance expertise, HSBC offers a fast, top-quality service covering import and export documentary credits, bills for collection, acceptances and confirmations, supported by Hexagon, HSBC’s electronic banking system.
Payments and cash management
HSBC is one of the leading providers of domestic and cross-border payments and cash management services to global and regional institutional and corporate clients in the EU. It offers payments, collections, liquidity and account services. Customers also have access to account services in the euro and in foreign currencies, as well as more complex pan-European liquidity solutions, including pooling and cash concentration.
Investment banking and markets
The division brings together the advisory and financing, equity securities, asset management, private banking and trustee, treasury and capital markets, and private equity activities of the Group. It serves HSBC’s corporate, institutional and retail clients.
Treasury and capital markets
The business ranks among the largest in the world, serving the requirements of supranationals, central banks, international and local corporations, institutional investors and financial institutions as well as other market participants. Products range from basic foreign exchange, precious metals and interest rate protection instruments to money market operations, bonds, futures broking, swaps and derivatives. HSBC trades actively in all major — including the euro — and many lesser-known currencies.

Major investment capabilities include equity, fixed income, cash, and structured and alternative investments.
