Overview:

We are the Register-Guard Federal Credit Union founded in 1954 by the employees of Guard Publishing Company and have been serving their employees, contract carriers, and their families ever since.

The credit union difference can be found at the Register-Guard Federal Credit Union as a member-owned cooperative, serving people with a common bond. Our Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee are all volunteers, elected by members, who give of their time and talents to ensure the safety and sound operation of the credit union and chart the course for the future. With a membership base of 2000 members, we may not be the largest credit union in the Eugene/Springfield area, but our size allows us to really know our members, most by first name. We understand our members individual needs and take the time to help them with their financial decisions whether that be with savings, investments, loans, home purchases or retirement plans.

Our motto is "Big Enough to Serve...Small Enough To Care". In this spirit, we strive to match our services with our members needs and take pride in ensuring fast and friendly service.

Your Credit Union - 50 Years - Still looking forward
November 8, 1954 to present

In the early 1950's the printer's union of Guard Publishing negotiated with their employers to organize a credit union. Several printers had belonged to credit unions before and felt the employees of the RG could benefit. Thus, on November 8, 1954 the Register-Guard Federal Credit Union was organized.

The credit union had many obstacles to overcome in its first 10 years. Among them was no regular office space or office hours and a lack of capital. The hard working part-time treasurer literally ran the credit union out of his coat pocket. Through those early years, there was slow but steady growth with the only promotion being by word of mouth. As the credit union grew, the wife of the treasurer set up regular hours when members could count on doing business. At this time, the sponsor allowed the credit union to have a desk in the basement behind the rolls of paper and a closet in which to store the records. The credit union eventually rented a room from the sponsor for $65 a month. In May of 1976, the credit union moved off-premises to a building across the street from the Register-Guard. From there we took up residence at 1065 High Street location and stayed until February of 1998 when we moved to the current Gateway office.

Over the last 50 years, the RGFCU has seen a variety of changes; changes within the credit union industry, personnel, locations, services, membership and the ups and downs of interest rates. Here are a few facts from our earlier days.
