Overview:

Having worked with individual investors for over 20 years, we have seen a lot of things change, a lot of fads and new products, a lot of "next big things".

And yet, after all has come and gone, and the dust has cleared, a successful investment approach always seems to come back to a handful of basic truths...

   * There is no substitute for fundamentally sound, high quality investments.
   * Complexity in and of itself does not enhance performance, or create value, and may even hinder performance. Conversely, the same can often be true of simplicity!
   * A sound approach will seek an intersection between the returns desired and accepting the least amount of reasonable risks to pursue those returns.
   * Keep an eye on costs; "low cost" is not synonymous with "great value", nor are high costs consistent with superior service or expertise; understand both what you are paying and what you are receiving for those costs
   * Thoughtful diversification and allocation is essential and timeless
   * Experience counts!

While it would be nice to summarize our philosophy into a single sentence or paragraph, perhaps it is best described as putting into practice the beliefs listed above. However worded or articulated, though, it is a philosophy that has been arrived at, developed, and reaffirmed repeatedly throughout the ages.
