Stirling Business Association (SBA)

Overview:

The objectives of the Association are to:

   * Promote reciprocal trade and communication within the Stirling region.
   * Exchange business, manufacturing and trading knowledge between members.
   * Promote social interaction between members on a regular basis.
   * Assist members by offering advice and guidance.
   * Act as a representative body in matters of interest to members in a non-political, non-sectarian manner.
History:

The Osborne Park Balcatta Business Association began as one man's idea over 35 years ago.

In July 1973 Colin Beaman, the vocation officer of the Scarborough Rotary Club invited local business people to attend a meeting and from this a steering committee was formed. The inaugural meeting was held in February 1974 with Bernie Ashdown being elected Foundation President of the Association initially named the Osborne Park Businessmens Association.

Beginning with only 20 members its aim was to improve trade between local businesses and to establish itself as a body which had influence in matters affecting its members. The strength of the Association has shown continuous growth over the intervening years with membership now one of the strongest in Perth.

In 1980 the Association was renamed the Osborne Park Balcatta Business Association and by this change included Balcatta business people and also identified that all business persons were welcome in the Association.

The first female member had joined in 1979 and ladies now number some 25% of total membership. Diane Hintz became the first female President of the Association in 1989.

Bob Neville, Life Member and Foundation Committee Member became the Association's first Managing Secretary in 1980 and worked tirelessly not only for the OPBBA but was also instrumental in assisting in the formation of other Business Associations in other areas such as Kewdale, Subiaco, West Perth, Nedlands and others, as well as the Combined Business Association.

Murray Langdon most ably followed on from Bob Neville as Managing Secretary and following his retirement in 1993 Christine Evans held the position of Executive Officer for the following 12 years.

In 1995 the Osborne Park Balcatta Business Association had a name change to the Stirling Business Association to reflect the vast number of businesses throughout Stirling.

After 7 years of tireless work from the Stirling Business Association (SBA) and the Small Business Centre Stirling (SBC-S), funding was gained for the development of the Stirling Regional Business Centre, which is a building of 26 offices available to lease to new small businesses. This 'incubator' style of serviced offices is designed to nurture new businesses with a supportive and convenient environment until they are ready to move forward into commercial premises, including providing free business advice. The SBA and the SBC-S co-manage this facility.

In 2005 Tanya Watchman came on board as the SBA Executive Officer and in late 2007 Samantha Calder took over this role. The SBA now employs one full time and one part-time staff member who service the growing membership base and the co-management of the Stirling Regional Business Centre.

In 2006 the Stirling Business Association website was launched. The SBA also has the very successful 'Contact' magazine distributed to all members on a monthly basis and the complementary annual 'Business Directory' to encourage reciprocal business between members.

The Stirling Business Association is still continuing to set the example for Business Associations in Western Australia and in continually looking to adapt and change for the current business climate, in an effort to meet the changing needs of the members.
