Merkur offers you a chance to make a difference. As consumers we influence daily the choice of goods that are being produced, by the choices we make when buying products. Money not immediately spent on consumption is held short term or long term in banks/building societies. But, not many of us actually ask our bank, insurance company or pension fund what initiatives are being supported with the accumulated capital?

Merkur, a public co-operative bank, was started in 1982 with the aim of making banking a transparent business. Our customers exert an influence as to how their money is being worked with and we keep them informed of the process. Each year we produce an overview of Loan investments and in our magazine, we highlight Merkur's transactions and current position within society.

   Merkur aims to support an environment in which individuals can freely develop their unique skills and abilities. We therefore give financial support to "free schools" and private educational institutions.

   Merkur aims to further cultural activities coming from the needs and interests of consumers. Student loans are one way we do this.

   Merkur aims at fostering the notion of goods being produced in response to real demand and with an awareness of the environment and our limited natural resources. We support production and trade strategies with these priorities.

   Merkur aims at supporting new ecological designs for housing, and use of renewable energy resources. We are all responsible for ensuring an immediate reduction in CO2, sulphur (acid rain) etc.. Restructuring our daily lives in new ways can help that happen.

   Merkur aims at supporting bio-dynamic farming, which besides being ecologically sound, comes from an expanded view of Nature and Human life that may well have a significant influence on future agriculture. Many bio-dynamic small-holdings are experimenting with new forms of ownership, consumer-groups, etc..

   Merkur aims at generally supporting ecological farming, as much as possible. Traditional farming is one of our world's most polluting activities; more up-to-date, sustainable methods of food production must be developed.

   Merkur sees as its primary function to offer advice and consultancy, and to give financial support, to co-operative projects. We therefore rely on our individual customers to manage their personal finances keeping the fact that we are a co-operative in mind.
