As a nationally recognized boutique investment banking firm specializing in mergers and acquisitions, financial advisory, restructurings, private placements and valuations, SSG has become the go-to firm for companies facing complex or challenging situations.

Since its founding, SSG has completed over 180 investment banking assignments in North America and Europe. Many of our clients faced generational, shareholder, operational, financial and/or legal challenges while others were in the process of a turnaround, had a broken balance sheet or were considering or in the midst of a Chapter 11 proceeding.

History: 

Founded in 2001, SSG is more than a nationally recognized boutique investment bank - it’s a partnership of a team of seasoned special situations veterans who have worked together for over a decade, sharing common goals and a common vision.

Starting out as SSG Capital Advisors, L.P., continuing their development as the group was acquired, then leading a buyout to purchase the business back, SSG’s leadership team has grown together to create an independent firm with a clear focus. Their history has forged an entrepreneurial spirit that leads to innovative thinking and bold action. The expertise, mutual respect and camaraderie they have developed have enabled them to build a team of professionals and complete over 300 investment banking assignments together.
1993

Berwind Financial hires Mark Chesen, who establishes and grows the Special Situations Group within the Investment Banking Division.
1997

Matthew Karlson joins Berwind Financial’s Special Situations Group.
1998

Michael Goodman joins Berwind Financial’s Special Situations Group.
2000

J. Scott Victor joins Berwind Special Situations Group after a 17 year career as a restructuring attorney.
2001

Berwind decides to exit the financial services business, affording Special Situations Group the opportunity to spin out and form SSG Capital Advisors, L.P.
2002

Robert Smith joins SSG’s New York office after a 20 year career at CIT, most recently as head of the Northeast Region.

SSG Capital Advisors ranked #14 nationally by Thomson Reuters for number of deals completed in 2002 less than $100 million.
2004

SSG takes over investment banking arm of Resilience Capital Partners establishing a Cleveland office.
2005

SSG ranked #5 nationally by The Deal for Investment Banks in Chapter 11 cases.

J. Scott Victor ranked #1 nationally by The Deal for Investment Bankers in Chapter 11 cases.
2006

SSG is acquired by NatCity Investments, Inc., a subsidiary of National City Corporation (NYSE:NCC). SSG operates under the name National City’s Special Situations Group.
2008

SSG ranked #2 nationally by The Deal for Investment Banks in Chapter 11 cases.

National City Corporation is acquired by PNC Financial Services Group.
2009

SSG’s five principals, J. Scott Victor, Mark Chesen, Matthew Karlson, Robert Smith, and Michael Goodman, form SSG Capital Advisors, LLC and reacquire the SSG practice from NatCity Investments, Inc.

SSG wins M&A Advisor's Turnaround Award for the Distressed M&A Deal of the Year ($100 Million and Above) for its role in the Boscov's Chapter 11 Sale Transaction.

SSG wins Global M&A Network’s Turnaround Atlas Award for Special Situation M&A Deal of the Year ($100 Million and Above) for its role in the Boscov’s Chapter 11 Sale Transaction.
2010

SSG wins the M&A Advisor’s Turnaround Award for the Boutique Investment Bank of the Year

SSG wins the M&A Advisor’s Turnaround Award for the Retail Sector Deal of the Year for its role in the Bruno's Supermarkets, LLC Chapter 11 Sale Transaction.

SSG wins the Global M&A Network’s Turnaround Atlas Award for the Deal of the Year in Retail Stores and Services Industry for its role in the Big 10 Tires Chapter 11 Sale Transaction.

J. Scott Victor wins the Global M&A Network’s Turnaround Atlas Award for the Restructuring Investment Banker (Boutique/Specialty) of the year.

SSG wins M&A Advisor's Annual M&A Award for the Consumer Services Sector Deal of the Year for its role in the PCAA Parent, LLC Chapter 11 Sale Transaction.
