Overview:

Lion of Africa Life Assurance Company has origins in the African Peoples Organisation (APO), formed in 1902. A political entity, the African People’s Organisation was an organisation rich in community history.

In 1923, the APO founded a Burial Society, later becoming registered in 1942 as a limited liability Funeral Assurer in terms of the Companies Act.

In 2002, Commlife Holdings acquired the APO Burial Society and subsequently renamed it Lion of Africa Life Assurance Company Ltd.

The Financial Services Board granted Lion of Africa Life Assurance Company its full Life Assurance licence in December 2005.

In 2006, Lion of Africa Life Assurance Company became a full member of the Life Offices Association (LOA) which is now incorporated in the Association for Savings and Investments SA (ASISA).

On 25 October 2011, the B-BBEE status of Lion of Africa was upgraded from Level 2 to Level 1, becoming the only Level 1 life assurance company in South Africa.

Today, Lion of Africa Life Assurance plays an active role in socio economic empowerment from grassroots level up, and has confidently established its strong presence in this highly competitive space.

One of South Africa’s largest black-owned financial services groups, Lion of Africa offers insightful insurance, life assurance, employee benefits and investment products, all aligned to the individual needs of the communities it serves.
