Overview:
There are those that say we are in a financial and economic crisis. I say instead, perhaps we are at a time of tremendous opportunity. This is not to trivialize what we are going through right now or minimize the impact it is having on all of us. It is to say that opportunities usually do not come to us occurring as opportunities, but rather they are often disguised as problems, predicaments, or even as a crisis.
Our world is changing. A number of dysfunctions have been revealed in our now global economic system. Here in the United States we are witnessing breakdowns in real estate values, mortgage lending, Wall Street firms, Detroit’s auto manufacturers, and many other areas. However, breakdowns are a natural occurance. They occur in areas that are no longer working. As such, they offer us the seeds for breakthroughs that can transform those areas.
Many of us want to see positive social changes in the world and I believe that right now, conditions and circumstances are aligned for this to happen on a global scale. Our recent election of Barack Obama, who is speaking and acting towards the changes we want to see realized, is one example of this. Were it not for the financial and economic crisis, it is quite possible that Obama would not have been elected. So, is there a way to benefit from these changes and even profit from them? Yes!
First, you need a plan. A Financial Plan first allows you to make sense of your financial affairs while providing a blue print or road map towards your financial future. It lays out the best course of action for achieving your financial objectives and then helps you to stay on that course. Once you know where you are going and how to get there, the next step is to harness and manage the engine that will get you there – your investments.*
There are many high quality investments available to choose from. The right mix of asset classes, properly managed, will likely allow your investment dollars to reward you over time. However, if you could invest in areas that reflect your values, and offer at least commensurate and perhaps superior returns to investments that do not reflect your values, would you not prefer that? Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) allows investors to earn competitive returns while making a positive impact at the same time. Money is a very powerful lever, and SRI allows investors to use that lever to create the world they want, while at the same time funding their future.
At Buttfield and Associates, we offer two primary services. First we write a Financial Plan for all clients. This creates the path for success in all areas of finance and minimizes the potential for sabotage. Then, we establish Socially Responsible Investment portfolios for clients that reflect their values and are professionally managed by a highly regarded third party money manager, First Affirmative Financial Network, LLC. |
