History:

Our Company was incorporated in 1851 (note the number we now use as our phone number). The incorporators were solid, local residents, mostly farmers, active in civic and religious affairs of this community. Our policyholders during that time smoked corncob pipes whenever they felt so inclined even though they couldn't buy safety matches. They didn't have smoke alarms, used woodstoves for heating & cooking, and certainly did not have the state-of-the-art equipment for fighting fires. Yet, our company only had 6 losses by fire during our first 10 years of existence.

We have been housed in five Salem County locations: the Garwood House Hotel, the Casper Building, the Dunn Building, 17 New Market Street, and at present, our offices at 125 West Broadway, Salem, NJ since January 1986.

Farmers Mutual of Salem began writing policies for Salem County homes and businesses and has progressed to serving our insured's through independent agents throughout the States of New Jersey and Maryland. We have gone from a company writing $50,000 to one writing over $40 million.

The methods of doing business have progressed from handwritten Board of Directors minutes to computer systems and imaging equipment. Farmers Mutual's family has changed from a close-knit group of Salem County people to include members from other areas of New Jersey, other States and those with insurance experience in America and abroad. The new family members come to Farmers with fresh ideas which go hand in hand with the solid conservative way of doing business with which Farmers has served its policyholders for over 150 years.

Although the faces have changed, there has been no change in the Company philosophy that puts our insured's first. Our goal remains the same; to provide "SUPERIOR SERVICE WITH PERSONAL ATTENTION" to all our insured's through cooperation with our quality team of independent agents.
