WELCOME, I’M JIM WHITE
I founded J. H. White Financial over a decade ago to create a transparent, client-focused, fee-only financial planning firm. Our refreshingly straightforward approach is honed on years of experience, and a genuine desire to help our clients align their personal finances with their goals of a financially secure future. We’ve carefully crafted a clear and structured process that provides us with a comprehensive understanding of your individual situation and objectives, enabling us to effectively support and guide you towards reaching your full financial potential.
The journey I took towards starting my own company was definitely not a typical one, but it has been amazing, and extremely rewarding.
I was always interested in investing and finance, and regularly found myself helping friends and family with their finances. I voraciously read every book I could find on investing, and even ran an investment club for several years with friends. Despite this, I had never considered a career in financial planning.
It was then thanks to two hugely important figures in my life that I started to see the possibilities that my love of finances presented. They both served as direct influences on the path I was on.
The first was my grandmother, who went back to work at the age of 53 after my grandfather suddenly passed away. She worked for 12 years to earn a pension to supplement social security and remain the independent, self-sufficient person she was.
She spent the rest of her life scrimping and scraping to pay the bills, yet somehow always managed to give her grandchildren and great-grandchildren a little something for our birthdays and Christmas. More impressive still, she hosted lunch every single Sunday for the entire family for 31 years.
The second person was a professor I had in the MBA program at Penn State. He not only convinced me I could become a financial planner and investment advisor, but that I should start my own business from the outset. His encouragement and direction were invaluable in getting J. H. White Financial to where it is today.
I grew up in Phoenixville, PA. I rode my bike without a helmet and spent my youth outside playing sports, exploring the woods with friends, and knew it was time to go home when the sun went down. I was also a proud member of the Phoenixville High School Tennis team.
I received my undergraduate degree from Ursinus College, and my graduate degree from Penn State University. The best part of college though, was that it is where I met my best friend and wife, Kim.
After college I worked for a Fortune 500 company. It was exciting to work in the corporate environment. Unfortunately the excitement faded and was replaced by dread after years of benefit cuts and work force reductions… the typical corporate story. That’s when I decided to bring the fun back and pursue my dream. I started J. H. White Financial in 2004, and I’ve been having fun ever since.
In 2008 I sat for the certified financial planner designation, and two years of preparing all came down to two days of testing at Villanova University. To say it was difficult would be an understatement. With a pass rate of just 53%, it was a long two months of waiting to find out if I’d managed it on the first try. I don’t know who was happier when I found out I had, my family or me. I don’t think they could have put with me studying for months again.
Kim and I currently live in North Coventry Township. We have two boys and three dogs. When I’m not working I’m usually coaching or driving the boys somewhere. I’m also on the North Coventry Township planning commission. I play golf, but I’m terrible. When I golf, clients think I lose on purpose, but no, I’m just that bad. It’s funny, whenever I golf with someone they’re always too busy to do it a second time. Just a pattern I noticed… |
