Long Island Angel Network, Inc.

Mission statement:

The mission of Long Island Angel Network, Inc. and its programs is to provide its members with exposure to, and access to funding for, early-stage companies with a Long Island home, including those with a focus on software and information technology, biotechnology, nanotechnology, medicine, energy, environmental technology, a strong intellectual property position, or innovative concepts.

The Long Island Angel Network fulfills its mission by providing a forum in which members can evaluate and exchange information about investment opportunities, primarily in technology- and innovation-focused early-stage and emerging growth companies in the $150,000-$2 million range. LIAN is a New York not-for-profit corporation consisting of individual angel investors interested in financing such privately held companies or ventures. LIAN screeners endeavor to select companies for presentation that they judge likely to be of the greatest interest to members, but the Network does not make investment recommendations; investors’ decisions are made individually. LIAN’s goal is to bring our region’s most exciting, promising early stage growth companies together with its most savvy investors.
Overview:

The lack of “patient capital” early-stage financing for start-up companies in their first years of growth, is known to be one of the most serious and intractable problems for new enterprise development. As a region critically dependent on its ability to “grow our own” new ventures, Long Island’s need in this regard is substantial. Long Island Angel Network was founded by Long Island leaders from a diversity of sectors and backgrounds, in collaboration with key technology sector business organizations, to fill this serious gap in our region’s capital resources for new enterprises and young companies. More information about the Network’s officers and directors, listed below, may be found on the Members page.

History:

The Long Island Angel Network was incorporated as a New York non-stock not-for-profit corporation on October 19, 2006. Its founding members adopted bylaws and other organizational documents during the winter of 2007, and the organizational members’ meeting followed. The first presentation meeting was held on October 9, 2007; as of August, 2008, seventeen deals have been presented. Four are currently in due diligence, with one expected to close shortly, funding has been deferred for two at the entrepreneurs’ request, and the remainder are still at some stage of member review.

The Board of Directors recently decided that, as of September, 2008, only members and their guests will be invited to participate in deal screening sessions or admitted to presentation meetings. Please see “For Angels” section for information on becoming a member. The annual meeting of members will be held in October; date and location will be posted shortly.
