When Preqin was formed back in 2002, the alternative assets industry was extremely secretive, with information on alternatives firms often only available at a very basic level, and sometimes not available at all.

The launch of Preqin's Private Equity Intelligence service marked a big change for the industry. For the first time it was possible to view fund performance data for thousands of private equity vehicles at the fund level, with our extensive methods of data collection ensuring that Preqin subscribers saw representative performance for the whole industry, rather than just for the funds that managers wanted others to see. Other products providing a comprehensive list of fund managers on the road seeking capital, and a database of institutional investors active in private equity soon followed.

Preqin extended its scope to include real estate in 2006, hedge fund investors in 2007, and infrastructure in 2008.
