Our philosophy

Our core philosophy is ‘intellectually honest investment management’. It’s easy to say, but not easy to execute.

It means having both the insight and the conviction not to follow the benchmarks – or the herd. It means being disciplined enough to stick to our core beliefs and risk parameters at all times. It means listening to our clients and creating solutions that can actually deliver what they need. It means being entrepreneurial in our thinking; objectively assessing new ideas and embracing them when we believe they’ll provide long-term benefits for clients. If we can make sustainable returns by breaking new ground, we’re not afraid to do things differently.

History:

GAM was established in 1983 by its founder Gilbert de Botton and was owned by UBS AG from 1999 until December 2005, when it was acquired by Julius Baer.

In September 2009, Julius Baer completed the separation of its private banking and asset management businesses which resulted in the independent listing of GAM Holding AG, the parent of the GAM group, on the SIX Swiss Exchange.

Clients asked; we delivered

1980s: Clients needed access to new and interesting sources of return. We created discretionary managed portfolios that paired traditional asset classes with significant exposures to world-class alternatives managers.

1990s: Clients wanted a manager who could find the hidden gems in the exponentially expanding hedge fund universe. We delivered the rising stars through moving early into new managers, as well as niche and emerging investment styles in our funds of hedge funds.

2000s: Clients asked for tax-efficient, tailored strategies to maximise growth and protect capital. We created funds and structures in a wide range of currency classes, income streams, risk/return profiles and investment vehicles designed to help clients meet their investment objectives.

2008: Clients were de-risking portfolios and expected a reliable partner during the worst of the financial crisis. We honoured our commitments on liquidity and due diligence, kept our promises and met our obligations.

2009: Clients were evaluating the balance of their portfolios. We widened the scope of solutions we provide by acquiring a highly experienced, modern, fixed income and currency team with expertise across absolute return, specialist hedge fund and traditional capabilities.

2010 to present: Clients demand transparency and liquidity. We’ve built an extensive range of regulated UCITS absolute return funds run by proven, reputable managers and a bespoke fund of hedge funds capability built on sophisticated asset allocation and reporting tools.
