Avatar is a New York based money manager that was founded in 1970 by Ned Babbitt and his first Director of Research, Marty Zweig, a noted investment leader. Zweig and Babbitt pioneered a number of now widely accepted investment disciplines. For example, our monetary research was summarized by the world as “Don’t fight the Fed.” Similarly, our respect for market information became known as “Don’t fight the tape.” Many are beginning to appreciate our way of measuring “Practical Value.”

Approximately 20 years ago, Ted Theodore joined the firm and become the second and only other Director of Research. Theodore played a key role in expanding the firm's competencies to the institutional market place by adding a global perspective to our processes, researching and focusing on sector rotation, and better assessment of style and capitalization risks.

Along the way Avatar became a leader in many aspects of investments. In recognition of this leadership, Marty Zweig was asked to cut the ribbon on the trading of the first equity future in 1984. Avatar became an innovator in portfolio overlay in 1990. In 1998 Avatar became one of the very first money managers to actively use exchange traded funds.
