Herbert Smith’s Beijing office was established in 1999 and now has over ten lawyers, including two partners, two senior consultants and one consultant. We have strong relationships with central and regional government authorities, state-owned enterprises and regulators.

The Beijing team has an 'on the ground' dispute resolution capability providing domestic and overseas clients with access to international disputes capability in China. Our China arbitration team is experienced in advising and representing clients under different arbitration systems, under different applicable national laws and in numerous jurisdictions in Asia and beyond. We have well-recognised expertise in energy, construction, finance, trade and investment disputes.

The corporate team has a reputation for advising on world-class capital markets transactions, including the US$21.9 billion ICBC flotation, the largest ever IPO and the first simultaneous listing on the Shanghai and Hong Kong stock exchanges. The corporate division has a long-standing worldwide reputation for acting for corporate clients in restructurings, M&A, joint ventures and share buy-backs, other general corporate matters and corporate transactions. Our China Investment Group facilitates these corporate matters and provides a full range of legal services in connection with PRC-related investment, projects and commercial matters.

The Beijing office also works closely with the Hong Kong energy team on some of the largest project financing deals and acquisitions/disposals involving mainland China corporates.
