For more than a century, Metuchen Savings Bank can claim continuous service to the community. Our emphasis has been to serve your personal and business financial needs with quality products and to deliver service by professional and courteous staff members, while maintaining fees at a minimum. Metuchen Savings Bank provides a safe haven for FDIC-insured deposits.

History:

We were chartered as The Metuchen Building and Loan Association in 1897 in order to develop the Woodwild Park area of Metuchen. Income Share Certificates and Installment Shares were the only two accounts offered as a source of funds to provide mortgage loans to its members until 1960. Despite limited hours and services the Association grew steadily along with the Borough of Metuchen. Through conservative management and expansion of services, Metuchen Savings Bank has survived two world wars, the Great Depression and numerous economic recessions to help thousands of people realize their dreams of home ownership.

The Bank moved to Main Street mid-century and changed its name to The Metuchen Savings and Loan Association after receiving approval for insurance of accounts. Passbook Savings, 5-yr Certificates of Deposit, Student Loans & interest-bearing Club account products were added and earned interest was paid semi-annually.

Technological advances later allowed interest to be compounded daily and paid quarterly. Tax-deferred Keogh and IRA Accounts were a new way for our customers to save for retirement. As the Bank grew so did out suite of deposit and lending products. Banking hours were extended with the addition of a Walk-up Window.

Interest Bearing Checking Accounts and Money Market products were introduced in the 1980’s, as well as the popular Six Month Certificate of Deposit. Fixed and Revolving Equity Loans and Commercial Mortgage Products were offered for the first time.

Our Charter was changed to Metuchen Savings Bank in 1993 and Commercial Checking Accounts and a Night Depository were offered to the business community. Automated and Online Banking Services were introduced. Construction of the Mortgage Office was completed in 1994 and the First Time Home Buyer Mortgage and Down Payment Club were offered. For years, Metuchen Savings Bank has maintained our reputation as a responsible lender…putting people in their dream homes, not in debt.

A true community bank, Metuchen Savings Bank has demonstrated leadership in Metuchen and surrounding areas not only by providing service but also by example. Metuchen Savings Bank has been a generous donor to many civic organizations including Rotary Club of Metuchen, Metuchen PBA Local # 60, Metuchen’s Fire Department and First Aid Squad. Our association with the local YMCA can be traced back to its beginnings, as Charles S. Edgar was one of the original founders of both our Bank and the YMCA in our community. Throughout the Bank's history active membership in the Metuchen Area Chamber of Commerce has been an integral part of our business model. In addition, Metuchen Savings Bank is in the business of taking care of the business community, with business checking, merchant services, escrow management services, commercial mortgages & lines of credit.
