Back in 1954, Cecil Christopher opened his doors to serve the bookkeeping and tax preparation needs of Athens and Limestone County. Shortly thereafter, Charles Durham partnered with Cecil to form Christopher and Durham Accounting, the forerunner of partnerships that has become today’s CDPA,PC. Early on, CDPA established its reputation by counseling local business merchants and farmers on tax issues. Things have changed quite a bit since 1954. Today’s desktop PCs and online tax notebooks have replaced the major tools of the trade from back then – the adding machine, pencil and paper. Figuring income taxes for a year’s average annual salary — back then it was almost $3,000 — has become more complicated with the constantly changing tax laws and new government regulations. Specialized knowledge is needed in almost every finance area to ensure that individuals and business comply with regulations and maximize their net worth. Through over five decades, CDPA remains committed to the enduring values that the firm was built on – dedication to civic responsibility and availability of personalized and expert service to help client’s increase their net worth. As a means to increase the expert, convenient and personalized service for clients, CDPA has responded to five decades of changes by expanding staff, resources and services. Originally opened a block west of the Athens square, the firm moved to their current expanded location on South Houston Street in late 1996. And in 2001, CDPA opened its doors on Church Street in Huntsville to better serve Huntsville and Madison County clients. The branch relocated to 101 Lowe Avenue in April of 2011. In July of 2015, CDPA opened an office in the SunTrust Bank building in Florence to better serve the northwestern part of the state. CDPA’s services have expanded and now includes offerings specialized to help clients meet the changing tax compliance issues and government regulations. In reaching the 50th year milestone, CDPA joins an elite group of a dozen or so Athens businesses.
