Founded in 1884, Gregory & Appel is the oldest independently-owned insurance agency in Indiana. We’re also one of the largest. Our firm is privately held and is in its fifth generation of family ownership. We balance a rich history of integrity, hard work and professionalism with innovation, technology, and creativity.
In 1884, John J. Appel and Fred Gregory opened their insurance agency in downtown Indianapolis with a rented office and a $7 desk. 129 years later with more than 100 employees Gregory & Appel Insurance is still growing strong. Today, we are the 66th largest insurance agency in America. Our growth has occurred organically—rather than through mergers or acquisitions—allowing us to focus on our employees and our clients. Gregory & Appel Insurance has been privately held and independent since its inception. Members of the Appel family have had an ownership stake in our company for all 129 years. Dan Appel and Steve Appel represent the 4th generation and Andrew Appel, Dan’s son, represents the 5th generation of Appels to work in the agency. Currently, our firm is also owned by twenty-eight of our employees.
