When Did J.L. Payne Income Tax Service Start Doing Your Taxes? What man can remember all? The world would like to know. What man is desirous of remembering all? Every man! But, such desire is one which heredity nor environment can possibly provide fulfillment. Yet, for every man there exists a multiplicity of things, which he cherishes and is desirous of remembering forever. What days, for me, could or would prove worth remembering more than the birth of my children, marrying my lovely wife and of course the early days of J.L. Payne Income Tax Service. I remember going to the Board of Education in February of 1974 and buying 2 desks for $40.00 to set up a tax business at 1425 Elvis Presley near S. Parkway next door to Hamkirk Grocery. I remember being open 30 days before my first customer, Elton Hymon (still a customer) came in, Mr. Hymon thought I should do a long form for $6.00 instead of the $8.00 I charged. Get your memory going, did you first come to us then or was it 2 years later when I was operating from my home at 4569 Whitewood Cove? Perhaps, you didn't know about us at all until 1977 when we moved to the back of the Four Spade Record Shop at 466 E. Shelby Drive near Hodge. Possibly it was in 1978 when A.C. Hunter and D.C Frison bought the record shop and named it "Disco Sounds." The tax office was expanded to a 12x14 cubicle, if you can imagine how small that was. If you were with us back then, you remember sitting in the hallway listening to the music of the record shop. Perhaps we had hit the big times in 1979 when you came on board and after we moved to the office building at 4161 Auburn for 3 years until 1981, then moved home again to 4094 Delsa circle. If you're an "Old Timer" surely we've hit your year by now, or do you remember? Our tax service operated there on Delsa Circle from 1981 to 1986. Ora 'Sue' Harper joined the firm in 1981. In 1986, we purchased a house at 853 E. Raines and converted it to an office building. The tax business opened at this location in January 1987. Our Raines location is managed by Ora "Sue" Harper. 1781 Winchester In 1994, we opened our 2nd location at 1781 Winchester, near Millbranch. This office is managed by, Trina Payne. 3747 S. Mendenhall In 2002, we opened our 3rd location at 3747 Mendenhall, near Winchester in Hickory Hill. This office is managed by Denise Herring.
