Joseph Bossert CPA Company, Chartered, was incorporated in Maryland on November 6, 2002, as successor to the unincorporated sole proprietorship practice of Joseph Bossert, CPA. That sole proprietorship was founded on January 1, 1990. Prior to founding his own firm, Joe worked at two different CPA firms. His path to becoming a CPA started at Calvert High School with business and bookkeeping courses. At age 17 Joe knew what he wanted to be. Joe's actual accounting carreer started while a college Freshman when he went to work as a Jr. Accountant at the Washington DC CPA firm of Mugmon & Reid, Chartered. Back then, most small business companies kept their accounting records in large black ledger books. His job as a Jr. Accountant was to manually post entries in those big books (think Bob Cratchit's job for Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol"). While a Junior in college he was promoted to staff accountant and began to work with the firm's clients directly, doing accounting and tax work. Tax returns back then were prepared by writing numbers by hand on actual blank forms. Any change to a tax return amount, even a minor one, required erasing or whiting out almost all written amounts and totals and then redoing and re-totalling everything again. Joe graduated from Benjamin Franklin University in Washington, DC, with a Bachelor of Science in Public Accounting degree. After that it was Borra CPA Review School. He passed the CPA Exam in May 1984 and became a CPA on July 30, 1984, while only 22 years old. Joe left city life and moved back to his rural roots in Cavert County, Maryland. He went to work for a local CPA firm in Prince Frederick, Maryland. There he worked as a staff accountant, taking care of business and tax clients for the firm. Personal computers came out during this time, and about 1986 or 1987 the firm started using computers to prepare tax returns. Joe left them in the Summer of 1989. From 1986 through 1992 Joe taught income tax courses part time at Charles County Community College (now called College of Southern Maryland).
