For most investors, even those with established experience in hedge funds, the process of executing a programme of investments in alternatives is a time-consuming process. Information, the raw material of reasoned decisions, is unevenly available. In addition, after a preliminary review, a majority of hedge funds often turn out to be unsuitable for one reason or another. This makes the process of hedge fund selection a labour-intensive proposition. Success in this field can only be achieved through competent team-work. We contribute our advice and articulate our reasons both in person and through written investment reviews. Our clients always have the final say; our role is to provide a contribution to their individual investment process. Research is the key ingredient of the service we provide. We spend much of our time developing sources of information and separating relevant intelligence from gossip. From this we identify managers that are right for our needs. We then conduct meetings in person through which new selections are made. These are a mixture of well-known and tested names but also include smaller funds that may be constrained by capacity.
