We developed the name Life Star as a metaphor to describe what we believe to be the most important aspects to financial planning. The Southern Cross constellation of stars has helped many different cultures navigate their way across the southern hemisphere. Financial planning, like navigation, cannot be done without a guide that directs you in your ventures, and ensures that you are on the right track. This is why we use the five points of the Southern Cross to illustrate the five key areas of financial planning. Our Philosophy A Financial Planner should do much more than make product recommendations. They ideally should be holistic in their practices, and guide you to make decisions and implement strategies that are tailored to your situation and goals. This is what The New Financial Planner is, and this is also our company philosophy at Life Star. A book that has been influential on our philosophy development is ‘The New Financial Planner’, written by Nick Murray. What a New Financial Planner will do for you: Put a comprehensive financial, investment and estate plan in place for your family, and guide you through the completion of that plan, year after year. Appropriately assess where you are in life – what you own, owe, can earn and what your expenses are. Beyond this, we will work out where you are starting from. Get an idea of your wish list of hopes and dreams – what you aspire to financially for your family and yourself. Ask when and how you want to retire. Find out what you may need to do for your own parents as they grow older. Find out what you would do if you could – such as paying for the education of children, making bequests to charities, caring for elder family members and so on. We then turn your hopes and dreams into concrete financial goals – we work out the details: What are the things you want to do going to cost, and when? What is the gap between where you are now and where you aim to be, and how much time you have to close that gap? Can you put away enough money, and can that money earn a sufficient return, to close the gap in the time allotted? We will determine the tradeoffs you need to consider, if the gap is too large. We work with what is possible, and we make that happen. Stop being afraid of your financial future – Get Good Advice A tremendous weight of concern is lifted from you when you know that you have a first-rate plan in place. No one can relieve you of the responsibility for your family’s financial success, but a plan – and a top quality Planner – can take away so much of the anxiety and worry involved. The New Financial Planner will help eliminate worry – we will insure you, and your dreams against the risk that you won’t be around – or wouldn’t be physically able to contribute. That way you and your family will be protected and provided for in any unforeseen circumstance. The New Financial Planner will work up an investment portfolio that has some history of producing the kinds of long-term returns calculated that you’ll need. They’ll let the Accountants and the Lawyers work out the technical end (Wills, Trusts and the like). The New Financial Planner will update the plan at least annually – more often if your circumstances really change, or when legislation does. Then it just becomes a question of giving the plan enough time, enough money, and enough trust. By investing in a good Planner, you can live your life on purpose. You don’t buy a portfolio, an insurance program or even a specific plan – you buy a Planner, his or her knowledge, expertise and care. A Planner will make sure you are aware of your financial position and help you manage it in the best way possible, so that you live your life on purpose, doing those things which are most precious to you.
