Playa Vista Capital Management believes the most prudent way to generate competitive returns is by buying high-quality businesses for less than their intrinsic value. We see the market as a mechanism to serve us, not control us; the inefficiencies of the market will occasionally present opportunities for superior businesses to be bought at a discount, and sold at a premium. Therefore, we look to buy fractional interests in these businesses when the market presents them at a discount. This is the art of value investing. When analyzing a business to potentially add to the portfolio, we use a check-list style approach, giving us a repeatable, proven process to proficiently invest proactively, not reactively. Investments that meet our standard must be businesses that we can understand; businesses with unique characteristics that give it a sustainable, competitive advantage over its competition, and businesses that have a history of being operated by honest and talented management. Taking a long-term approach is another one of our core investment principals. As the market encounters its share of vicissitudes, we want to have long-term capital in place to buy when businesses are cheap. We believe the value of a business is the present value of the future cash the business is going to generate over its operational life, not the quoted value the market assigns on a moment by moment basis. As such, we view risk based on the fundamentals of a company, which include factors like: predictability of cash flows, immunity from negative extrinsic market forces, and the opportunity for gain relative to the probability of incurring a loss of capital. By incorporating this strategy into securities, private equity and venture capital opportunities, we position our portfolio to be truly agnostic to opportunities, leaving room only for the best holdings.
